Path of Pico Grande

The relvinha is 3km from the viewpoint of boca da corrida, place that constitutes one platform of access to the pedestrian track between relvinha and Fajã Escura. On reaching relvinha it is possible to glimpse the beauty of the region's central mountain range, where the Pico Cidrão, in foreground, it is noted for its magnificence.

The eira do serrado is a mandatory stop for any tourist passing through the region.

This route, mainly on clay, provides excellent views of the central mountain range of the Madeira island. A few meters from the Chão das Relvinhas it is possible to make a detour through a small path, which gives access to the pico grande (1654m).

During the route it stands out the innumerable natural viewpoints that allow breathtaking views over Curral das Freiras, and sometimes the valley of Serra d'Água, also to Funchal and Paul da Serra.

Schedule

Starting point in Funchal, following up the road near the La Vie Shopping Center, going up to “São João” street, following to the street “Madalenas” turning left, going up the road “Igreja de Santo António” and entering the road Eira do serrado (er107), and finally access the tunnel of Curral das Freiras. When you see the tunnel you must move on and enter it. When arriving at the center of the parish, you should go to the higher part in order to arrive in Fajã Escura to begin the route.
